My name is Sonia Reagan and this is my 5th year with Liberty Public Schools. Prior to coming to LPS I worked as a child and family therapist in outpatient mental health and residential treatment facilities. I am a licensed professional counselor and registered play therapist. If you get a chance to stop by my office this year, you will find that it is LEGO themed. (Previous school years have been Superheroes and Angry Birds).
Outside of school I have two children of my own, ages three and one. I have found Conscious Discipline to be helpful and effective in both my professional life as well as my personal life. I hope to teach you more about some of the tools and interventions that I love through this website and when we get a chance to talk in person or by phone.
What does my kid really do in "counseling" at school?
I meet with each student in the TLC program for individual and group counseling. I also work closely with the classroom teachers to provide behavior support and intervention within the classroom.
Individual Counseling: During these times I meet with students privately to discuss and review their personal goals for the school setting. We focus on goals agreed upon in the IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan, as well as problem-solve any difficulties which are interfering with their relationships at school or their academic success.
Group Counseling: Each student will be placed with other students who have similar areas of concern. Students can then begin to look toward their peers for support, while also understanding that they are not the only child who struggles with Anxiety, ADHD, Anger Management, etc. I have planned activities meant to educate students on ways to cope with their struggles and succeed in school, but allow the students share as little or as much as they choose about their personal experiences or feelings.
